Youth in the Community Program (YIC)

  • YIC provides knowledge to Stratford students about volunteering.
  • Refers students to various volunteer experiences within Stratford and the Greater Bridgeport Area.
  • YIC is a clearing house which collects and maintains information about regional agencies.
  • Shares information with students to help them find a meaningful and rewarding volunteer experience.

All students, especially high school students, are taught how to document their volunteer hours so they can receive a half course credit (60 hours) on their transcript (Stratford Public Schools). In addition, students are taught how to use volunteer letters of recommendation to start building their resume and also make use of their letters for applications relating to jobs, college, or both. Middle School students are made aware of the importance of volunteering their time and talents and to begin documenting their volunteer hours. Generally, students must be 13 years of age and in 7th grade to be able to volunteer at most agencies in the community, including Sterling House.

Students are asked to complete and submit the YIC Information Form to Sterling House staff.  Download the YIC Volunteer Information Form here.  Approved staff may communicate with students at school, phone or email, if more information is required to help them find a meaningful volunteer opportunity. The information provided will be used to highlight sites that may be the best fit for the student as well as notify students about additional volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
