Position Overview

Sterling House Community Center, Inc. (SHCC) is seeking a dynamic new team member to lead our athletic programs. This individual is passionate about youth sports, driven to innovate and expand our current programs, motivated to make an impact in the community, and an experienced non-profit or recreation professional.


Responsibilities include

• Plan, supervise and implement all SHCC youth and adult athletic programs 

• Create and manage the athletics budget, in collaboration with the finance team 

• Evaluate athletics programs, trends in participation, and implement recommendations for expansion and innovation of current programs 

• Ongoing development of new programs, including future 2021 incorporation of Erin’s Gym 

• Create new avenues and initiatives to increase our programs and outreach to the community 

• Hire, coordinate, train, mentor, oversee and evaluate all athletics staff: coaches, officials, scorekeepers, supervisors, and concession stand 

• Purchase and maintain all necessary program and field equipment 

• Provide ongoing written and verbal communication with parents/guardians regarding program structure and season updates 

• Monitor and mediate issues that arise between coaches, families, spectators and players 

• Partner with Marketing and Communications Coordinator to update and maintain all athletics information on social media, website, marketing materials, or press releases 

• Collaborate with the Director of Development to secure program and team sponsors 

• Collaborate with Stratford Recreation Department to secure field and gym permits and Stratford Parks Department for field lining, preparation, and maintenance 

• Attend monthly Parks & Recreation Committee meetings, in addition to other committee meetings as assigned or needed 

• Develop and maintain positive relationships with other agencies, municipal employees, community organizations and other resources in the Greater Bridgeport community 

• Manage SHCC’s vehicles including: scheduling of maintenance, emissions testing, annual June inspection of the passenger van 

• Promote the annual Debbie Diaz Sportsmanship Awards, seeking nominations to identify the recipients 

• Participate in SHCC activities as requested, such as fundraisers, community meetings, staff meetings, and other activities as assigned 

• Support positive promotion and communication of SHCC 

• Performs other duties as required for the benefit of Sterling House


Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in non-profit management, business, or recreational fields preferred 

• Experience creating and implementing large-scale athletic programs 

• Experience and enjoyment working with diverse populations 

• Exemplary communication skills. We need a strong leader balanced with the grace to stay calm under pressure and manage conflict 

• Strong computer skills with experience utilizing online registration and field/facility scheduling programs 

• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think on your feet; high standard of attention to detail 

• Strong time management with the ability to prioritize and multi-task 

• Mission-driven, team-player who is passionate about working in a community center environment 

• Bi-lingual Spanish ideal, but not required


Requirements

• Ability to lift approximately 40 pounds of equipment/supplies 

• Valid Driver’s License and clearance of background check, including Motor Vehicle 

• Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (or within 90 days of employment)


Commitment

• This is a full-time position, with eligible benefits, at 40 hours a week 

• Off-season schedule is a typical Monday – Friday, 9-5pm. During the sports seasons, hours shift to include evening and weekends. Employee is expected to work with supervisor to schedule and communicate their hours during the seasonal changes.
