Junior Counselor

Specific Duties:

  • Works under direction of Counselor and other designated staff as part of camp team.

  • Assists in supervising all aspects of the campers’ day including Morning Meeting, End-of-Day Meeting, all time slots, Field Trips, etc.

  • Assists counselor during dismissal time to assure that campers are kept together and safe while counselor meets with pickup people.

  • Assists in the responsibility of leadership and guidance of your campers paying attention to their personal safety, participation in all activities, mealtime behavior, and habits.

  • Follow the lead of the counselor and participate and assist with activities as assigned.

  • Serve as a good example in personal language, appearance, and health habits.

  • Support the counselor with the opportunities provided for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.

  • Watches out for the health and safety of his/her campers, especially regarding: sunscreen applications wanted by parents, washing hands before every meal, proper eating habits, and drinking plenty of water.’s

  • Assists in managing the behavior of his/her campers, especially regarding physical, emotional, or verbal abuse of others. No bullying allowed.

  • Assists in supervising the group at meals.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist in maintaining constant supervision of your campers.

  • Assist in observing camper behavior to assess its appropriateness, and assist the counselor when they apply behavior-management techniques.

  • Help maintains the cleanliness of the activity area to which he/she is assigned.

  • Model, teach, and uphold the Sterling House Code of Conduct and protects the well being of all campers.

  • Assist in coordinating group or Camp Wide Activities.

  • Care for and maintain equipment, supplies and property of camp.

  • Encourage physical, emotional and social growth and positive character development in all campers.

  • Prepared to do anything else deemed necessary by the Camp Director.

Qualifications:

  • Going into 10th, 11th or 12th grade

  • Able to put others’ needs before own. Can pay attention to task/focus

  • Flexible and able to accept supervisions and guidance

  • Good communication skills

  • Previous experience as a CIT or JC at Sterling House or other camp

  • Leadership ability and teamwork oriented

  • Possess a variety of skills and camping experience

  • A commitment to working with a diverse staff and camper population for the fulfillment of Sterling House’s goals
